Copper Roof Shingles
Many people love the look of copper and a copper roof is especially attractive. There are
two different types of copper roofs. There is the solid copper roof which is constructed of sheet copper which is very resistant to weathering
and will protect your home for decades and is particularly costly. And there are copper roof shingles, some of which are made by layering sheets
of copper with asphalt or fiberglass. The shingles will probably cost less than a slate roof but once the copper roofing shingles have aged and
been weathered they will take on the characteristic green look that only copper can produce.
Can I Use Copper Roof Shingles on My Roof?
One of the advantages of copper shingle roofs offer over other types of long lasting roofs, particularly the solid copper roof, is that the
shingles are fairly light and buildings can handle the load well. As long as you are willing and prepared to pay approximately $4 per square foot
(as compared to $1 for standard asphalt shingles) there is probably no reason why you can't install copper roof shingles on your roof. For
comparison, a solid copper roof would cost up to $15 per square foot.
What is the expected lifespan of copper roof shingles?
Asphalt roof shingles will typically last only 20 years, but when covered in copper sheeting the lifespan can easily be extended to between 30
and 40 years. The copper sheeting itself is very durable and will last an average of about 150 years. Of course, the copper roof shingles will
last only as long as the asphalt or other materials which are placed underneath the copper.
What is the Cost of Copper Roofing Shingles?
Copper roof shingles are by certainly not a cheap alternative to other types of roofing materials, but if you love the look of copper and you
want a durable roof, then copper roof shingles are an excellent choice. The copper sheeting does an excellent job of protecting the asphalt
shingles underneath, giving them an extended life. The copper sheet also protects the shingles from common wear and tear so that with regular
maintenance you won't need to frequent repairs.
So, while copper shingle roofing will be much more expensive for the initial installation, it is quite economical of the life of the roof.
Standard asphalt roof shingles normally cost about $1 per square foot, while solid copper roofing is priced around $15 per square foot. Copper
roof shingles are will cost approximately $4 to $5 per square foot so they are four times more expensive than asphalt but significantly less
expensive than a full solid copper roof. You are certainly paying for the exceptional beauty of a copper roof but will spend less than covering
the entire roof in an expensive metal.
