Constructing Homemade Bathroom Vanity Fixtures

by Wyatt Fisk

Highly functional contemporary bathroom furniture pieces such as the vanity is becoming an important bathroom fixture because of its ability to hold multiple items such as drawers, mirror and the sink. In these economic times however, having your own bathroom vanity can be considered as a luxury as this fixture can be quite expensive. But, if you're creative enough and you have an old cabinet or dresser just waiting for you at your attic, you have the option to make your own vanity for a lesser cost. Below are simple steps that you could follow to achieve a modern looking bath vanity made from your old cabinet or dresser.

Transforming old dressers or cabinets into modern bathroom vanities, be they double sink or single sink vanities, requires little reworking. The tools that you need to have for this project includes a cabinet or dresser, saw, sink fixtures, pencil, plumbing fixtures, screws, sealant and paint, L-brackets, anchors, and drill. To begin with your vanity project, measure your cabinet and dresser; this is important to know the type and size of sink that you would be using. If you want to save yourself from expenses, you could still use the sink that you are currently using in your bathroom. However, the only drawback with this option is that you would still have to remove the sink from its connections which means extra work for you, so it would be more preferable if you buy a new one as you could also use it for the years to come.

Once you already have your sink, set it aside for a while since it will not be used on the initial stages of your vanity construction. Focus on your cabinet or dresser first; remove all the drawers from your furniture, and at the back of your cabinet cut out a hole big enough for you to properly slide the sink plumbing. As modern bathroom vanities are stand alone fixtures, make sure that you properly measure and mark the plumbing on your wall before you make a hole so that it would properly correspond to the cabinet or dresser once it is put in place. Be sure to sand all the holes you make to have a smooth finish.

To mimic the pristine finish of modern bathroom vanities, there are two options to properly install your sink. First, if you're using a traditional sink or your old sink that sits flat on the counter, begin tracing the opening of the sink on the top of your cabinet, and then cut this opening with a jigsaw. As for the second option, if you are to use a bowl type sink, carefully read the installation instructions included in the package of your sink in order to know what type of hole plumbing you have to make, and simply follow these guidelines. Once you're done cutting the hole, test fit your sink, drain fittings and plumbing connections to ensure that they complement each other.

After fitting the sink, remove it first and start painting your dresser or cabinet with a color suitable for the color scheme of your bath area. If there are some modifications that you have to attend to, be sure that you do them all before painting your cabinet and before your permanently position your sink. Once the paint is dry, you can now attach your contemporary bathroom furniture to the wall by using a drill, L-brackets and anchors to secure its position. Then, you can now install your sink.

In order to properly position your sink on the countertop, flip your sink over and place a sealant around the inside lip. After which, carefully lower it down to the vanity and remove sealant residue. Finally, connect the water supply lines to the sink. Now, you can indulge on the beauty and functions of your homemade modern bath vanity.

If you want to set a modern look for your bathroom, placing contemporary bathroom furniture can do the trick. Modern bathroom vanities are stand alone fixtures that could serve as the focal point bath spaces. However, as vanities can be a bit expensive, instead of buying one you may want to try making your own modern bath vanity. This project is easy to make that you can do it over the weekend and would also guarantee you to save money.
