Maintenance Tips For Water Fountains

by Wyatt Fisk

Having a water fountain is always a great addition to any indoor and outdoor space. Inside our homes, a wall fountain or even that little tabletop fountain on the corner profoundly affects the atmosphere around us, making a space more serene and relaxing. However, operating and running these water features require more than just adding water. There are other things that one has to do in order to keep these fountains up and running, and some of them are written below.

Periodic cleaning is an essential element that would help keep your water fountain in its superior shape. This applies to all fountain models, regardless if they are used outdoors or indoors. When a fountain is not clean there's a large possibility that algae and dirt will build up on its motor, causing it to run loudly and the water will leave water spots on the basin that are hard to remove. Make sure to give your fountain the wiping it needs on a regular basis with the use of cleaning products, change its water periodically and use water treatment if possible.

Fountains need water to be added at regular intervals as evaporation is a primary factor that causes immediate water loss. If you're going to add water on your wall and tabletop fountains, use distilled water in place of regular tap water. Unlike tap water, distilled water has no mineral compositions and impurities that could build up on the surface of fountains, affecting their appearance. But, if you can't purchase distilled water all the time, you can still use tap water, only see to it that you use water treatment products to improve its quality.

Always put in mind that water is a good breeding ground for bacteria to develop. You will easily identify if bacteria are present in water if oily films of liquid begin to build up on the surface of water. Aside from periodic water change, make sure to use UV lights to illumine the basin of your water feature especially wall mounted fountains. UV rays radiated by such light source prevent the growth of bacteria.

If in good condition, water coming from wall and tabletop fountains are suppose to sound like a smooth flowing stream. However, if the water level of your fountain is too low, it will sound more like water babbling from a large water pump. To keep the serene flow of water in your water feature, make sure that the water basin is always full. Do this by filling it with water whenever you are going to water your plants, this way you would not forget doing this process.

Lastly, keep your water fountain pump in good condition by permitting it to run constantly. Frequently turning the pump on and off could actually affect how it functions, and would shorten the service rendered by your fountain as doing this could eventually wear out its motor. If you main concern is your electric consumption, what you need to do is to turn off your fountain at night time, and power it up during the day. This way the motor would be able to rest for longer hours as well as the water pump.

Having a wall fountain could definitely perk up a room. For instance, wall mounted fountains can naturally enhance the atmosphere inside your living space, while tabletop fountains could make tables appear more inviting. However, if you wish to use their services for long, you may want to consider attending to their maintenance needs that includes periodic changing of water, regular cleaning of motors and water pumps just to name a few.
